We were standing on the shoulders of giants

15 Jahre Human Interface Design Celebration Keynote, 20.11.2014

HID_HAMBURG: A great 'thank you' to mprove for giving an inspiring and charming keynote about HCI pioneers at our 15th anniversary party last night.

The important question for the future is, where do we go from here?

And I urge you as you go forward, to do the things that you find exciting. […] Because the thing that you find exciting leads you both to your own pleasure but also to the pleasure of others because your are likely to do them well. And we admire things that are done well.

Douglas Engelbart

Douglas Engelbart interviewed by Frode Hegland, 2000:

…the world is very complex if you are trying figure out what you would fix, etc., and how you’ll go up trying to fix it. And one Saturday I – God – the world is so damn complex it’s hard to figure out. And that’s what then dawned on me that, oh, the very thing: It’s very complex. It’s getting more complex than ever at a more rapid rate that these problems we’re facing have to be dealt with collectively. And our collective ability to deal with complex urgent problems isn’t increasing at anything like the parent rate that it’s going to be that the problems are. So if I could contribute as much as possible, so how – generally speaking – mankind can get more capable in dealing with complex urgent problems collectively, then that would be a terrific professional goal. So that’s… It was 49 years ago. And that’s been ever since. [audio]

Alan Kay

We were standing on the shoulders of giants. – Alan Kay

Aus der Einleitung zu Alan Kays Doktorarbeit (1969):

It is not the purpose of this book to determine why human beings build machines, nor is it to describe how. Yet a certain amount of metaphysics may creep into the discussion from time to time, since any investigation into the design of devices which are actually used by people must of necessity try to guess what the class of potential users will want. Of course, they do not know themselves if their needs are potentially interesting, and it is useless to poll the remainder (as previous experiments have shown) for they exhibit the well-known “committee syndrome”: “… the only form of life with ten bellies and no brain.”

Joseph Weizenbaum

Joe Weizenbaum, Klagenfurt 2007

Alles is sagbar in Worten.
